Anonymous Rex

My first name is unique enough that typing it and only it into google yields a hit with my full name on the first page of results. This is pretty much the entire reason I try to have an anonymous web identity. Really, in the interests of being able to speak one's mind to the fullest extent, is there any good reason to use your real identity on a web site?

  1. Anonymity (even relative) is a great comfort these days. I know there was (is?) a bunch of furor over employers Googling or checking up on the myspace pages of current or prospective employees. But honestly, you can't imagine that anything posted on the internet is private. If you were to say, "I'm John Smith, I work at Tesco, and my supervisor Karen Wilson is a completely incompetent bitch who needs to be shown the back side of my hand," can you honestly expect NOT to get reprimanded or fired over it? I mean, come on!

Blogging is (in some ways) like writing on a bathroom wall. Yes, maybe it's intended as a vent, an emotional safety valve, but people can't pretend that it is in any way private and be offended if someone uses their own words against them, IMHO.

  2. Yeah, I try not to be offended when I get my own words thrown back at me. I never succeed, but I do try. But at least it all happens relatively anonymously.
